History of the Whippet Breed

The Whippet breed originated in the 19th century when coal miners in Wales and Northern England crossed greyhounds with terriers, to create a “poor man’s race horse” who also functioned as a bed warmer.

Whippets are medium-sized dogs, smaller than greyhounds and larger than Italian greyhounds. Typically, whippets stand 18 to 22 inch tall, and weight between 25 and 40 pounds. Their short, clean coat can be any color. By the 1920's the slender and elegant whippet was widely appreciated.

Today’s whippet still loves to run, then return home to sleep between the sheets or on the sofa. Whippets are gentle, highly sensitive connoisseurs of comfort.
